Growing Food Over Winter Series - Session 2 - Sowing and Saving Seeds

Join Mike, Jo and Sam from Manchester Urban Diggers while they prep the garden for winter at Platt Fields Market Garden. Each session will cover a different area of winter food growing so you can attend 1, 2, 3 or all 4 workshops depending on what area interests you.

About the event

Session 1 - Bed Preparation and Mulching

You will join Mike and get your hands dirty whilst learning about the ins and outs of getting your growing beds ready for winter. This will include clearing beds, crop planning, mulching and feed. You will also discuss protecting your crops and discuss the difference between winter and summer growing.

This session will inform your decision making going foward in to the winter season so you feel confident to grow food all yar round.

Session 2 - Sowing and Saving Seeds 

There's a number of different options for winter growing. This session will cover sowing for a winter harvest. You will help Jo from MUD sow seeds that we will harvest this winter such as oriental leaf and salad leaves. You will also discuss the different options for growing under cover and the pros and cons of each one. It will be the right time of year to be saving seed so Jo will take you through the basics of seed saving for small gardens and allotments.

Session 3 - Pruning and Propagation 

Pruning fruit and nut trees and bushes with Sam. Learn how to propogate fruit and nut bushes and trees with Sam from MUD. This is the best time of year to get your trees and bushes in their best shape for next year. 

Session 4 - Overwintering Veg and Growing Undercover 

For the final session you will cover over-wintering veg. What this term means and why it matters. There are also a number of other vegetables that need to experience some cold in the winter to thrive. All of this will be covered whilst helping Mike with the sowing for next years harvest. 

Each workshop will include hot or cold drinks and will take place at Platt Fields Market Garden. 

The sessions will be based arounf the garden, under cover when possible. 

We suggest you wear warm layers and waterproof clothes. 

We can provide boots if requested. Wellies and walking boots are reccomended if you do not have work boots.
