How does volunteering work at MUD?
We’re incredibly lucky to have an amazing community of volunteers - and we’re always excited to welcome new faces to our Gardening Club!
Gardening Club runs every Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm at Platt Fields Market Garden. If it’s your first time, just sign up on our website and come along for 10am on any Friday or Saturday to get started with a short induction.
After your induction, you can drop in anytime - though we recommend arriving early to catch the morning briefing where we run through the day’s tasks.
There’s always a wide variety of jobs to suit all abilities and energy levels. Whether you’re after something gentle - like sit-down tasks in the shade - or up for something more physical - like turning compost or using power tools - there’s a way for everyone to get stuck in.
On any given day you might find folks:
Planting, weeding, watering or harvesting
Prepping lunch from garden produce
Building or mending garden structures
Painting, decorating, or just tidying up
Peeling spuds and having a natter in the sun
No gardening experience? No problem. Whether you're brand new or have years of experience, you’re very welcome here.
Lunch is at 1pm, when we all eat together. You’ll be given a token for lunch by the volunteer coordinator when you arrive. Yellow tokens mean lunch is £3 (or more, if you’d like to pay it forward). Pink tokens are for free lunch - just have a quiet word with the coordinator if that’s what you need.
Lunch is a hearty vegan one-pot, freshly cooked by our garden chefs using whatever’s seasonal and delicious from the garden.
We know coming somewhere new can feel a bit daunting, but don’t worry, most people come alone their first time. There’s always a friendly face to chat to, and our brew station in the small polytunnel is stocked with tea, coffee, and often a few biscuits too.
We’re also looking for people to help us out with comms, admin, forest school and more. Get in touch if you think that might be you or if you have any other skills you’d like to share.
